Audition FAQs
Can I join if I’m not a music major?
Sure! The University Symphony Orchestra is open to all HKBU students (ADF, AD, BA, MA), staff, and alumni by audition.
When can I audition?
Please contact us at www.hkbuso.org or email us at hkbusymphonyorchestra@gmail.com to schedule an audition time.
Where do I go and who do I audition for?
You’ll audition for Prof. Poon (orchestra conductor) at his office in OEM706b.
What do I need to do for the audition? How long will it take?
You’ll be asked to play a short section/excerpt from any piece that you know (your own choice) followed by several assigned orchestral excerpts (you may download the excerpts from the links below and practice the music before the audition). The whole audition should only take about 3-4 minutes.
Do I need to prepare anything?
Yes, please do go over the audition excerpts before the audition. But most of all, we want to know you and what you could do with your instrument – be prepared to impress us with your own special brand of musicality. Be yourself and have fun with the music.
What is the rehearsal schedule?
We rehearse every Wednesday night from 6:30-9:30 pm in Music Rehearsal Hall (ASH 700), Ho Sin Hang Campus.
Do I receive academic credit?
HKBU undergraduate students may enroll in the orchestra as a class for 1 unit of academic credit.
